#ShareAScene SINGER CLASHES WITH COUGAR

I received word last night that my short play Singer Clashes with Cougar will be performed in NYC on June 6th at 7:30pm at TaDa! on W. 28th Street. The production is by [Your Name Here] A Queer Theater Company. I wrote this play at the end of last year. It had its first production on live cable TV in March.

If you like, you can watch the entire play (18 minutes) here, mins 24 to 42:

Here is a scene from Singer Clashes with Cougar

(PUMA ENTERS. ARDI doesn’t notice. SHE picks up her guitar, starts strumming softly.)

PUMA

I’m sorry I scratched you. You know I didn’t mean to, don’t you?

ardi

Yes, of course. I knew you were just startled by Feliz. He’s such an idiot. But, you can’t stay here! He has called the police, and they …

puma

They plan to kill me, I know.

ardi

You shouldn’t be here. You should hide somewhere safe.

puma

I want to be near you. I heard you singing that song, and I couldn’t help myself. I’ve never felt quite that way before. Could you … would you sing more?

ardi

I don’t think that’s a good idea right now. I’m concerned for your safety.

puma

It’s fine. Feliz gave them the wrong address. They will not be here for a long time. Please sing to me. Just the chorus.

ardi

(Sings) Oh my darling be mine
Won’t you say that you love me
All my passions so tender oh please surrender your love divine
Ah my darling be mine
Won’t you say that you love me
Oh my passions so tender oh please surrender your love divine

puma

That’s so pretty, and you’re so pretty. You make me purr. May I put my head in your lap?

ardi

Yes. You are such a beautiful animal, Puma. And so trusting. I feel I could tell you anything.

puma

Please, tell me something.

ardi

I will tell you my dreams. I came to this country when I was just sixteen because my father did not understand who I was in my heart. I longed for love and to sing and for people to want to hear my voice and see me. I wanted to be a star. Isn’t that silly?

puma

No. You have a star spirit, my Ardiente. I can see it shining through your eyes, I can hear it in your voice. I felt it calling to me through the walls of this building. That is why I had to break in. I had to be near you.

ardi

But the love I longed for was not the kind approved of by my father, Puma and he disowned me. That is why I left my home, my madre, my country, and became a wanderer. I broke my mother’s heart. I miss her so much.

puma

Tell me, my star.

ardi

I felt love for others of my own kind. Other girls. They called me names.

puma

Love is love, my Ardiente. Did you find love with another?

ardi

I have had my heart broken a few times, Puma. I have not given up on love.

puma

Never give up on love!

ardi

Oh, Puma! I love you!

puma

Do you, Ardi?

ardi

Let me kiss your beautiful cat lips, and I will show you!

(SHE kisses PUMA on the lips. PUMA is thereby changed into a human woman, 35 years older than ARDI.)

Oh! Madre de Dios!

puma

Ardi, sweet Ardi. Oh honey, you look so shocked! I should have told you. It’s like when the princess kisses the frog. You know, you kissed me and turned me into a human woman.

ardi

But, but you are … you are old. Older.

puma

I am an old cat. Couldn’t you tell that from looking at me?

ardi

Um. No. And anyway, it didn’t matter. You were a puma.
